Project 2025: What Dietitians Should Be Paying Attention To (Part 1)
A breakdown of the proposed policies and what it means for people who care about food and nutrition
Food is political.
Whether you agree with that statement or not, you can’t deny that food has been politicized. Dietetics is a field of mostly white women, so we need y'all to pay attention, mobilize, and get this house in order.
With only a few months left before Election Day 2024 (and even less time before early voting begins) I’m doing a deep dive into the proposed policies of Project 2025 that most directly address food, nutrition, and health issues.
While I’m deeply disturbed by nearly all of it, this is my lane (professionally speaking) and these are the topics I’m probably most qualified to analyze and talk about. I saved a real doozy for the very end.
Big caveat: Yes, I’m a dietitian. But first and foremost, I’m a human. I didn’t always prioritize my humanity over my profession. That part bugs me. So at this point, I can’t identify more strongly with what I do for work than who I am as a person. That being said, I won’t be keeping my personal views out of it. But I’ll be tactful about it and try to keep it to a reasonable frequency.
Going into this, I really encourage you (dietitian or otherwise) to sit with these ideas and ask yourself, “Does this really align with who I am as a person? Is this what I want for our future?”
